When everyone's existence depends on the lies they tell, trust doesn't come easy.

Ivy’s neighbors have a secret. They aren’t human. But Ivy has a secret, too. She knows. As long as everyone keeps quiet, she’s happy working as a P.I. by day and chillaxing with her BFF Florian, a vampire, by night. When a routine pickup drops her in the middle of a murder, her two worlds collide. While Florian knows how to throw a punch, deep down he's a softie. His idea of scary? Running out of hair product. It’s time Ivy faced facts. Even with a vampire on stand-by, one gal can only kick so many asses.

For help, she must put her faith in others. A human, who might just be the one. A demon, who will, for a price, open the doors to her heritage. And a werewolf, who wants to protect her from herself.

Torn between these men, Ivy must tread carefully, because one wants her heart, one wants her body, and one wants her dead.

Fans of The Hollows and the Anita Blake series will get a kick out of The Silverton Chronicles.

Sigh, mechanically the writing and editing in this book seem fine. Unfortunately, in my opinion the plot is totally useless. The book is all over the place, but more to the point, I hated it.

As a romance it fails on SO MANY levels. Let me put it like this. She has a condition that after her 25th birthday (because apparently magic knows your b-day, y'all) she literally lusts after every man she sees, even though she actively doesn't want to. She then goes on to try and date one man, have sex with another (several times), almost have sex with a man in an alley, and love a man. Unfortunately, she doesn't do any two of those things with the same man. That's right, she's trying to date one man, while having sex with another (and lusting over everyone) and then on the last page, last paragraph basically we're told she loves another. WTF? There was no development on that. But what kind of satisfying romance do you think a book can have if the heroine trying to give her body to every man she meets,?

But, for me personally, the biggest issue is that this idea that women can't control their own sexual urges is an old, painfully patriarchal one. It's one of the reasons why they can't be trusted to own and have authority over their own bodies. We still fight this stupid idea to this very day, in real life. And the book had the perfect patriarchal ending, she pretty much ended up with a man who had the power (extra power she gave him) to control her. She goes against her own natural inclinations to be with him. You know what, author, write historical if you want to write this kind of trite. I ended the book steaming.

The whole thing was only made worse by there being exactly 3 women in the book, other than main character and some background victims (who were raped, because of course they were). Two were characterless sisters, basically just names to fill in the cast. One was the cliched jealous harpy who will probably sell the heroine to the villain in future books, because that's what the jealous harpy always does in such books.

I bought and read this book because, somewhere along the way I ended up with an audible copy of book two, and wanted to listen to it. Now, I'm kind of regretting both.

Guarded The Silverton Chronicles Book 1 eBook Carmen Fox Reviews

The world of Silverton is different from most of the other fantasy worlds out there. Ivy, as she preferred people to call her, is a complex character. Part Satyr, part Demon, and part Guardian, she reached her "maturity" at age 25, came into her sexual and other powers, and became best friends with a vampire Florian and his sister Julia who appears to be a real fantasy writer (this is a first... I won't spoil the suspense and say who), and bonded with a werewolf alpha named Parker and his pack. She was still dealing with her history of abduction and enslavement from age 19 to 21 by the demon overload Lathan. Every chapter took an unexpected turn but the turns were somehow justified by those that transpired. It is hard to imagine this story with all these twists coming from imagination alone, no matter how vivid. Only some form of reality can yield such plot complexity because imagination usually follows expectations while reality is often surprising. The characters were vividly constructed. The seduction scenes were clearly heart felt. The satirical rationale behind the sexual encounters was convincing, as well as the practical female dislike of doing it in dark alleys and in the woods. There is plenty of action. Ivy is an attractive, strong, and independent woman.
Overall it was an ok story. There were some parts that were predictable (not giving away spoilers), but there was one part, fairly early in the book that was just completely unbelievable. The main character was kidnapped and torchered for 2 years. She escaped, but she knew that the ceature that kidnapped her wanted her back and has minions in her world that could do it. So, she is in the corridor where her office is, she senses that there is someone coming up behind her but she doesn't look to see who it is? The person comes up and injects her with some toxin that makes her plyable. Now, I have never been kidnapped, let alone torchered, but that kind of bravado/carelessness just doesn't fit. Later on she mentions her paranoia? yeah, no. I realize it was a means to then introduce another character, but there needed to be something that didn't scream "This would never happen". Frankly, with that kind of carelessness, she isn't safe anyplace.
The vampire was funny.
The whole pack thing was odd.
I think that with what she was trying to project, the whole business with Waylan should have ended early in the book. If you tell someone not to call you something and there reply contains the word you asked them not to call you, I have walked away from people like that.
It ended a bit predictably but the main character showed some decent spunk. At the moment, I don't know if I'm going to get book 2 or not, probably not for a long wile anyway.
Four stars because this book started out confusing me. I had a really hard time wrapping my brain around the world that Ivy, Florian and the gang inhabit and the first couple chapters left me feeling like this should have been book two. So much happens to Ivy before the book even starts, I felt like I was missing stuff. Don’t know if the author reads her reviews but there could definitely be a prequel. Just sayin. That said, I hung with it and was very glad I did. The world finally comes into view, everything starts making sense and there’s a ton of action and drama (and some steamy scenes) to make putting the book down difficult. I admit, I’m used to reading stories with strong, tough as nails female leads, and someday Ivy will be that lead, but she’s not there yet. This book is about her learning about herself - her strengths, weaknesses (she’s got a lot of them!), how to accept help and how to use what she’s got. The cast of characters that support her are well developed, likable (and hot!). The writing/grammar is good, there were some timeline issues for me, but I feel that the author will be able to work them out as she goes along. I’ve already purchased book two and definitely recommend this read. If the first couple chapters confuse you, keep going, it gets better.
